Hope in Hops

Posted on September 21, 2007

Seem to have suffered blog block lately; always something else more demanding than this nice quiet little patch of white to write in. I think this year would definitely number among the three most difficult and turbulent years of my life but hey (as Elton John always says) I’m still standing.

Around mid-August, when I was really starting to feel as though life was crushing me and screwing me up in a little ball to throw away, I read in my horoscope (which I don’t believe for a minute) that come September 3rd everything would be better. I would ‘discover that life doesn’t need to be so difficult’ quite cheering and it would seem accurate as well.

I’ll tell you something quite interesting about blogs is that the ‘dashboard’ shows  you the search strings that led people into your blog. The highest ranking search on this blog, attracted by some random entry I made God knows how long ago is ‘a cure for grumpiness’.

How sad is that? So many grumpy people looking for a cure. I’m sure I didn’t have the solution but actually I believe that beer helps. I’m not a big beer drinker, maybe half a dozen Corona annually would be my limit but truly you do feel a little more cheerful after a beer - must be the hops. Hope that helps.

Dancing on Coral

Posted on September 11, 2007

I was really saddened to hear that author Glenda Adams died last month (shows how out of touch I am that I only just found out) She was a terrific author and I still have strong memories of her novel ‘Dancing on Coral’ from reading it twenty odd years ago.

She taught creative writing at post-graduate level for the last couple of decades, both here in in New York, which is no doubt what prevented her from writing more than four novels. But then maybe four was enough and she got a kick out of teaching and nuturing other writers. Seems that just as she retired to focus on her own writing she was diagnosed with cancer. Nevertheless she has left a legacy of both her teachings and fine Australian writing.
